Nurses Contribution
Nurses across the AEC Network have been working together with the support of the Royal College of Nursing to understand the nurses' role in AEC Services. The nurses' role varies between departments but whatever the level of nursing involvement there are common themes and skills. AEC nurses take a lead in assessment of patietns, guiding them through their AEC journey with explainations, plans and coordination in a area of high turnover and liaising with multiple other professionals in both Primary and Secondary Care. Time and time again AEC patients comment on the positive relationship they had with the nursing staff and nurses are seen as the glue that holds the whole system together.
Developing the Field
As AEC services develop nurses are in an exciting position of being able to shape the future direction of AEC as a speciality in its own right. Within the network there are individuals and sites that are pushing the boundaries of nursing roles and developing new skils that are transforming the care of their patietns. Being part of the AEC Network provides an opportunity to share this experience and learn from other sites who have faced similar challenges. We work closely with the RCN and SAM to provide professional support to our members and build a unique body of knowledge and research.
